Reduced heat island effect and cooler surface temperatures on paved surfaces.

Project Solution

Sika Scofield SOLACHROME™ Integral Coloring Treatment for High-SRI (solar reflectance index) Concrete was a clear fit given the design expectations. SOLACHROME™ is weather resistant, UV stable, and most importantly offers increased solar reflectance so it keeps surface temperatures low helping to improve guest comfort level while using the outdoor spaces during the hot summer months. It can safely color concrete fountains, pools, water features, or concrete that will be polished and encounter damp or wet environments. All pigments used conform to the requirements of ASTM C 979 Pigments for Integrally Colored Concrete.

Universal Studios’ designers have always been at the Scofield’s SOLACHROME™ Integral Coloring Treatment for High-SRI Concrete to be used at The Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Cabana Bay is a retro (1950’s-1960’s) themed resort which features 1,800 guest rooms and suites located on site at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. SOLACHROME™ was used in the children’s water play area to help reduce surface temperatures and heat transfer. Being in full sun, outdoor pool areas have the potential to store and release a significant amount of heat. By using SOLACHROME™, Universal’s designers took an important step in helping to develop a comfortable, relaxing and fun environment for their guests.

Several other Scofield integral colors were also used throughout the project. These colors were selected for their aesthetic integration into the overall design. The walls were poured in CHROMIX® Admixtures “Limestone” color. Shaded flatwork utilized “Spring Beige”, “Winter Beige” and “Mesa Beige” in sponge and exposed aggregate finishes.
