The Kalahari at Hillside expansion showcases how EIFS with drainage can deliver both creative freedom and high‑performance functionality in large‑scale hospitality environments. As part of the resort expansion, the design team needed a cladding system capable of achieving Kalahari’s signature African‑themed aesthetic while meeting budget, durability, and energy‑efficiency targets. EIFS proved to be the only single system capable of providing the required design versatility, supporting ten distinct colors, multiple textures, and seamless transitions between wood, stone, and sculptural elements. The system’s ability to incorporate Wood Grain Effect finishes allowed designers to replicate the rich warmth of natural wood without the long‑term maintenance or cost associated with organic materials, giving the hotel avisually striking yet economical exterior.
Beyond its design flexibility, EIFS played a critical role in meeting performance and constructability requirements across the 70,000-square-foot facade. The prominent elephant feature was carved onsite from EPS, and demonstrated the sculptural freedom EIFS provides, enabling elements that would be difficult or cost-prohibitive with traditional materials. With EIFS applied across the majority of the building and an EIFS air‑ and water‑resistive barrier installed behind the masonry areas, the enclosure benefits from continuous heat, air, and moisture control, supporting long-term energy efficiency, moisture protection and durability. EIFS with drainage offered a comprehensive cladding solution that aligned with the resort’s branding goals while streamlining installation and ensuring lasting performance in Wisconsin’s demanding climate.
