At 70°F (21°C) and 50% relative humidity coating will be dry-to-touch in 1-2 hours. First layers may be recoated in 2-4 hours. Full cure occurs in 5 days. Higher humidity, lower air and surface temperatures will extend drying time.

Coverage will vary depending upon substrate texture and porosity. Rough textured and absorptive substrates may require additional coats to achieve proper film build. Applicators should obtain a consistent film build free of voids and pinholes. Sika Facades recommends preparing a test area to determine actual coverage. Apply SikaWall®-414 Bestcoat® liberally in a consistent and un-extended manner.

Fine Texture: To ensure above grade waterproofing, always apply two coats of SikaWall®-414 Bestcoat®. To achieve a coverage rate of 75-100 square feet per gallon (1.53-2.04 m2/L) apply with a Wet Film Thickness (WFT) of 16-20 mils and achieve a Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of 8-11 mils per coat. To achieve a coverage rate nearer to 150 square feet per gallon (3.06 m2/L) apply with a Wet Film Thickness (WFT) of approximately 12 mils and achieve a Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of 5-6 mils per coat.

Surface must be clean and sound. Concrete substrates should be free of all bond-inhibiting contaminants and be cured a minimum of 28 days. Blast surface with high-pressure water (use abrasive blasting on hard, dense surfaces) to a medium grit sandpaper texture. Repair holes and damaged concrete with appropriate masonry repair materials. Remove protruding concrete accessories and smooth out any patches, irregularities or surface defects. If stains require chemical removal, rinse thoroughly with clean water to neutralize removal compounds.  Remove surface blisters or delaminated areas. Sand edges to flatten or plane rough areas and provide smooth transitions to old paint areas. Check adhesion of old paint using ASTM D 3359, measuring adhesion by Tape Method A.

Cracks: Locate and properly treat all cracks. Clean and detail static hairline cracks caused by drying shrinkage and fill using a brush coat of SikaWall®-414 Bestcoat®. Allow patching material or sealant to cure. Clean and detail static cracks greater than 1.32" (0.8 mm) in width and fill with appropriate patching compound. Treat cracks greater than ¼" x ¼" (6 x 6 mm) as standard sealant joints according to a reputable sealant manufacturer's instructions.

Efflorescence: Scrub the affected area with a stiff bristle brush followed by a water rinse. Allow to dry, but repeat as needed. If efflorescence persists, power washing may be necessary. Commercially available efflorescence cleaners or muriatic acid may also be used. 

Mix SikaWall®-414 Bestcoat® at slow speed with drill and mixing paddle to ensure uniform color and homogenous disbursement of ingredients; minimize air entrapment during mixing. For multi-pail applications, mix the contents of each new pail into the partially used pail to ensure color consistency and smooth transitions from pail to pail.

SikaWall®-414 Bestcoat® is meant to be applied as a two-coat system, achieving a total dry film thickness

(DFT) of 8-11 mils. It is designed as a high-build acrylic coating and can be applied generously.

Apply by brush, spray, roller, or spray with back-roll technique. Maintain proper uniform wet-film thickness (WFT) during application to ensure the performance characteristics desired (see Coverage section).

Always work to a natural break and maintain a wet edge during application. For uniformity of color and texture, application techniques must be consistent throughout the project. Inconsistent application techniques will produce texture or color variations.

Prepare a 4 x 4 ft. (1.2 x 1.2 m) test area to verify color, texture and adhesion acceptability before proceeding with any project.

-Roller: Use a quality ½"-1¼" nap roller cover (lamb's wool preferred). Never roll product with an incompletely wet roller. Saturate the roller thoroughly and keep it laden with the coating to build up the required mils. Roll with consistent vertical strokes to achieve uniform thickness of coating while maintaining a wet edge. Follow by back rolling in one direction as stroke variations may result in unbalanced color and irregular texture.

-Brush: Use a nylon brush only. Application by brush is only recommended for small inaccessible areas or touch-ups.

-Spray: Use a heavy-duty sprayer designed for the application of coatings that contain sand particles. Specialized equipment is available for spraying SikaWall®-414 Bestcoat®. After spraying, back-rolling is strongly recommended to achieve a uniform texture and film thickness. Contact Technical Service for further recommendations.

Clean all tools and equipment immediately with water. Cured material may be removed by mechanical scraping.
