Coverage
First coat: 430 to 440 ft2 (39.9 to 40.9 m2).
Second coat: 615 to 655 ft2 (57.1 to 60.9 m2).
Combined two coats are approximately 255 to 265 ft2 (20.9 to 24.6 m2)
*Coverage rates vary depending on porosity of substrates and application techniques.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The surface should not contain irregularities greater than 1/8”. All divots, pits, mesh overlaps, and mesh patterns must be leveled and skimmed with Parex 121 Dry Base Coat to correct any imperfections. To ensure a smooth surface, two applications of base coat are required. Note: All leveling corrections must be made using the base coat. Sand or stone the surfaces to reduce imperfections and remove trowel marks. Remove dust/debris prior to application of SikaWall®-95 Tinted Primer. Apply Tinted Primer at a rate of 150–50 ft²/gal.
MIXING
Mix by using a clean spiral or Jiffler style mixer with a low speed drill. Do not use drywall mixing paddles. Wipe sides of pail down with a water soaked rag to help eliminate dried particles from falling into the product. Spritz a small amount of water over unused material before replacing the lid. Replace lid when not being used.
APPLICATION
Recommended Trowels
First coat: Stainless steel tapered 12x4 Venetian trowel.
Second coat: Stainless steel tapered 12x4 Venetian trowel for initial application. Flexible plastic Venetian trowel to create the final smooth appearance. Ancora makes a plastic trowel (article number 817/RS-1mm) that has been found to work well. Note: Use of standard EIFS/stucco trowels (either new or broken-in) may result in uneven finish application.
Application
- Two coats of PAREX® Image Smooth Finish are required. Apply the first coat of PAREX® Image Smooth Finish using a 12x4 Venetian trowel at a uniform thickness of 10-15 mils. Maintain a wet edge at all times during application. Application thickness is critical. Where insufficient thicknesses are applied, discoloration and rapid drying may result. Excessive thickness may cause check cracking.
- Allow the first coat of PAREX® Image Smooth Finish to dry and partially cure, then sand the finish with 100-150 grit sandpaper to remove trowel marks and create a smooth surface. Change sandpaper frequently. For best results, sand PAREX® Image Smooth Finish on the same day that it is applied, before it is fully cured. Wipe the sanded surface with a damp rag to remove dust.
- Extra care is needed with power sanders. If they are used, rotate sander in a figure 8 pattern to avoid creating a sanding pattern. Avoid sanding deep holes into the PAREX® Image Smooth Finish surface.
- For the second (and third coat if needed), a small amount of cool, clean, potable water may be used to adjust workability. Do not add more than 15 oz. of water per full pail of PAREX® Image Smooth Finish.
- Apply the second (and third coat if needed) in thin (8-12 mil) applications, using the stainless steel trowel. Additional trowel pressure will be needed to ensure adhesion of the second and third coats. Free style leveling is not recommended, since it can result in wavy surfaces that become evident in critical light.
- Manipulate the second finish application (or third, if needed) using the flexible plastic Venetian trowel to obtain a smooth, trowel line free application. While manipulating the thin second or third coats, be prepared to spritz the surface of PAREX® Image Smooth Finish and the face of the trowel with clean potable water, using a hand-held spray bottle. This will help maintain a wet edge if the finish begins to set before
application is complete. Dark burnish marks from the trowel can be an indication that additional water is needed to maintain a wet surface. Manipulate the surface until it is smooth, achieving a trowel line free application. Note: spritzing water onto dark colored PAREX® Image Smooth Finish may cause minor discoloration. - If discoloration of dark colored PAREX® Image Smooth Finish is unacceptable, apply SikaWall-4080 Color Advance Coating tinted to the same color as the PAREX® Image Smooth Finish to create a uniform color.
- If color uniformity is not achieved on the second coat, Color Advance Coating or Parex Aquasol Coating may be applied in lieu of a third coat of PAREX® Image Smooth Finish.
- If a mottled effect is desired, use the stainless steel Venetian trowel for final leveling of PAREX® Image Smooth Finish.
