THE STANDARD COMMUNITY APARTMENTS AT GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

ABOUT THE PROJECT

“The Standard” is an upscale student apartment community that was completed in early 2019. Residents indulge in an urban, vibrant and walkable environment close to shopping, dining and entertainment destinations. The 13-story building has all the amenities you can imagine having “fun” while you learn.

Sika’s role in this project was to supply waterproofing for the 45,000 sf Rooftop Deck that included a Sky Terrace & Lounge, swimming pool and activities space.

The contractor chose Sikalastic 320 NS to waterproof under pedestal pavers, in planters and under an Olympic size swimming pool on the top level of the parking deck. One of the unique benefits of Sikalastic 320 NS is that you can catalyze the material by adding water to accelerate the cure rate. This was important for “The Standard” because it overcame the concrete outgassing nature of the unique building materials the Architect selected.

To create more useable space between floors the Architect specified a modified/inverted “Double T” to form the floors and ceilings.  When it came to the roof, they placed geofoam in the space where the Double T stems were eliminated and poured a 3-inch topping slab. This caused water to be absorbed and settle in the geofoam cavities. The reaction was a potentially high rate of concrete outgassing during summer high temperatures. The faster setting catalyzed Sikalastic 320 placed in the cooler morning hours was a great solution.
