SikaSet® HE

Accelerating Admixture

SikaSet® HE is an accelerating admixture that enhances the early strength of concrete. SikaSet® HE contains Calcium Chloride. SikaSet® HE meets the requirements of ASTM C-494 Types C and E admixtures.

Accelerated Set Times and Strength Development: SikaSet® HE may be used to accelerate set times and increase early strength gain where job-site efficiency is important in order to meet construction deadlines. SikaSet® HE saves time and money by allowing faster finishing and stripping of concrete formwork.
  • Insulation and heating costs during curing time are reduced.
  • Accelerated set times allow crews to finish concrete earlier, saving on labor costs.
  • Earlier stripping and reuse of forms increases labor productivity.
  • Accelerated strength gain allows earlier structural use and speeds completion time.
    Cold Weather Concreting: At the recommended dosage rate, SikaSet® HE will protect concrete from freezing in most sub-freezing temperature conditions and may reduce the need for cold weather concreting practices as specified in ACI 306 – Standard Specification for Cold Weather Concreting.

Usage

SikaSet® HE is an effective and economical accelerating admixture for use in cold weather concreting applications. Cold temperature may slow down the hydration process and may damage the hardened concrete properties if not treated properly. The slower hydration process can be overcome by the use of this accelerating admixture. SikaSet® HE contains Calcium Chloride, it is not recommended for use in prestressed concrete, post-tensioned concrete, nor reinforced concrete structures.

Shelf Life

Shelf life when stored in dry warehouse conditions between 50 °F and 80 °F (10–27 °C) is 1 year.

Storage Conditions

SikaSet® HE will begin to freeze at 20 °F (-7 °C). If frozen, thaw and agitate thoroughly to return to its normal state before use.

Application

Application Information

Mixing

Add the correct amount of SikaSet® HE at the concrete plant. The admixture may be added manually or by automated dispenser directly in the mixer or into the water at the batch plant. When used in combination with other admixtures care must be taken to dispense each admixture separately into the mix. Do not mix with dry cement. Field evaluations should be carried out to determine the minimum ambient and concrete temperature required, and the optimum dosage for the desired setting time and strength performance. Sika strongly recommends that appropriate, sound curing practices be followed to protect fresh concrete from excessive heat loss in extreme weather conditions.

  

Combination with Other Admixtures: SikaSet® HE is highly effective as a single admixture or in combination with other admixtures in the Sika System.
Consumption

Recommended Dosage

To accelerate set times dosage at the rate of 8–50 fl. oz. / 100 lbs. (520–3260 ml/100 kg) of cement is recommended. When used to protect concrete from freezing, dosage will vary with different brands of cement and ambient temperatures and higher dosages may be necessary. Sika recommends that trial mixes be performed to determine the most efficient dosage. When using 16 fl. oz./100 lbs., adjust mixing water accordingly.
