Volunteers from Sika Corporation, Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and the local AEC community joined forces with Rebuilding Together San Francisco on Saturday, August 19, to take part in “Give Back Day.” The goal was to help provide some much needed maintenance and refurbishment to the popular community garden at Adam Rogers Park in San Francisco’s Hunter’s Point neighborhood.
“Working with Merideth Marschak of the Construction Specifications Institute and Jen Leshnower with Rebuilding Together truly was an incredible experience,” said Brian Blaquiere, Marketing Communications Director at Sika Corporation. “When Jen discovered this amazing community garden that is used by a local youth organization, we all knew it was the perfect project for us!”
Building Communities & Repairing Lives
In the spirit of volunteerism and community partnership, Sika supports the "Rebuilding Together San Francisco" initiative to help provide some much needed maintenance and refurbishment to the popular community garden at Adam Rogers Park in San Francisco’s Hunter’s Point neighborhood.
Throughout the day, volunteers accomplished a number of important objectives. They built a planter box, compost bin and park sign, provided hours of weeding and gardening upkeep, initiated several sections of a retaining wall, and cleared, cleaned and reorganized the gardening greenhouse area.
“With the amount of projects we were able to complete you would have guessed we had been working together for years, but the reality is that most of us met for the first time that morning," Blaquiere remarked. “Everyone came prepared to work and gave 110 percent. We could not have had a more dedicated team, and it was really amazing to be a part of it.”
The Adam Rogers Park and Community Garden is part of the immense San Francisco Recreation and Parks system, but the day-to-day facilitation is managed by the Hunter’s Point Family Organization. Each week from Tuesday to Thursday, this organization hosts a small but growing program for 20 kids from the neighborhood to learn about the importance of youth enterprise, community building and the environment with hands-on lessons. Adam Rogers Garden is also a space in which families from the surrounding community can gather and grow produce.
Rebuilding Together’s mission is to help make homes safe and healthy by mobilizing teams of volunteers to revitalize neighborhoods and renovate public green spaces, nonprofit facilities and schools. Sika Corporation is proud to continue its long tradition of teaming with the organization by recruiting volunteers and working to help communities across the country.
