Sika suppliers around the United States competed in the final round of the North America Sustainable Packaging Challenge in July at Sika's corporate headquarters in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Sika Hosts Second Sustainable Packaging Challenge

The Sika Sustainable Packaging Challenge collaborates with current and potential suppliers to develop innovative sustainable packaging solutions that support Sika's decarbonization and sustainability goals.

Suppliers chose to compete within six different packaging solution categories: tinplate cans, plastic buckets/lids, plastic valve bags, stretch film/hood, paper valve bags, and plastic cartridges.

Since Sika's inaugural Sustainable Packaging Challenge in 2023, Sika has not only expanded the challenge globally but has also prioritized implementation of winning proposals. For example, Sika Corporation recently implemented the 2023 winner's (Berry Global) 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) 5-gallon pails, which allows almost all the decorative concrete packaging produced in Aurora, Illinois, to boast more sustainable packaging.

Strategic Thinking, Presentations, and a Winner!

Sika’s most strategic packaging suppliers were invited to submit their initial sustainable offering proposals. Proposals were evaluated by a Sika committee made up of 12 key department members from sustainability, procurement, operations, marketing, product management, and EHS.

The goal of the Sika committee is to ensure that the winning proposal is ultimately embraced by Sika and receives the support it needs to facilitate the integration of a new and sustainable packaging solution into the company's operations.

More than a dozen packaging suppliers participated in the competition, with six of them being selected as finalists and invited to participate in the final live exhibition, where they were asked to provide prototypes of their proposals.

The winner of Sika's second North America Sustainable Packaging Challenge is Trioworld!
Founded in Sweden in 1965, Trioworld is a leading producer of packaging solutions based on polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) film, and is committed to innovating and developing more sustainable solutions. Their winning proposal featured stretch wrap and stretch hood products that both reduce plastic consumption and close the loop by recovering and utilizing 30% PCR plastic. Ideally, implementation of Trioworld’s packaging will begin in the near future, being widely used at all manufacturing sites to help pack products onto pallets, lowering Sika’s carbon footprint while maintaining the same great performance!
