Application
Ambient Air Temperature
Apply above 50°F and only when weather conditions allow sufficient time for curing/drying before rain, dew or freezing temperatures. Cool temperatures and high humidity may increase drying time.
Substrate Temperature
Surface temperatures should be 5°F above the dew point and at least 50°F. In hot climates, apply the base coat in falling temperatures.
Substrate Moisture Content
Substrates should be 4% or less as measured by a Tramex Moisture Meter. Wet adhesion is typically obtained with use of a primer (see primer chart for more details).
Waiting / Recoat Times
Apply an additional coat once previous coat has cured.
Drying Time
4 - 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity.
Coverage
Application is 24 wet mils (1.5 gal per 100 SF).
Max application rate is 32 wet mils (2 gal per 100 SF).
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
- Applicator is responsible for confirming the roof is in sound condition with an acceptable, fully secured substrate, proper slope to drain, and is readily acceptable for a coating restoration system. Any areas susceptible to ponding water should be resloped to properly shed water from the roof.
- Applicator is responsible for completing a moisture scan of all roof surfaces to receive Sikalastic®-515 AC. All wet insulation should be removed and replaced.
- Tighten and/or replace all existing fasteners. Install crickets and complete all needed sheet metal repairs.
- Remove all unnecessary and non-functional equipment and debris from the roof.
- Remove dirt, and foreign material detrimental by thoroughly cleaning all roof surfaces with a pressure wash (2,000–2500 psi, 13.79–17.24 MPa). Surfaces contaminated with oil, grease, animal fats, etc. must be removed using tri-sodium phosphate and water, or other solutions as required by job conditions and as permitted by local, state, and federal regulations. Remove all cleaning solutions with plenty of fresh water and allow to dry.
- Membranes with seam and flashing failures must be repaired using professional and industry standard corrective measures and then detailed.
- Seal to watertight around projections, machine legs, sign posts, guide wire straps, inside and outside corners, cant strips, gutters, parapet walls, caps, all screws, seams, skylights, joints, pipes, voids, protrusions and any areas where water could enter through the roof.
- Clean and seal all areas around drains to watertight.
- Allow roof and other prepared surfaces to dry completely before proceeding with field priming and/or coating application.
- Note: Thickness values of cured films are averages and can vary due to surface finish. Rough, irregular or granulated surfaces may require additional coating to meet minimum dry film mils.
- Always check the weather prior to application. Depending on the ambient, and substrate temperatures, relative humidity, and dew point take extra time and caution when applying the system within 24 to 48 hours of precipitation and/or when raw or freezing temperatures are experienced or anticipated. Do not apply over wet insulation or related materials.
- Prior to coating any surface, be sure the coating will adhere by performing an adhesion test (ASTM D-903).
- Sikalastic®-515 AC shall extend a minimum of 3'' (76.2 mm) beyond the edges of the repair, feathered onto the substrate.
- Prime all surfaces with the appropriate primer according to the application instructions from the Product Data Sheet, and allow to dry.
MIXING
Mix 5 gal. (19 L) pails with a variable speed drill utilizing a jiffy mixer to suspend any settled pigments until a uniform color and consistency is achieved. Mixing time will vary based on temperature and atmospheric conditions. Usually 3 minutes
APPLICATION
Sikalastic®-515 AC may be applied by brush, roller, or spray. Do not apply when temperatures are below 50 °F (10 °C) or when precipitation is in the forecast within 48 hours. In areas where the roof is subject to foot traffic, it is recommended to apply walkway pads for added protection and slip resistance.
Detailing
Always start with details using Sikalastic®-515 AC or Sikalastic®-515 FG. For all details use Sika® Flexitape Heavy embedded in Sikalastic®-515 AC or Sikalastic®-515 FG , or Sika® Joint Tape SA including: round projections, drains, machine legs, sign posts, guide wire straps, inside and outside corners, gutters, parapet walls, penetrations and similar areas. Repair any damaged metal and caulk and seal watertight all screws, seams, transitions, terminations, penetrations, skylights, joints, pipes, voids, protrusions, drains and any areas where water could enter through the roof. On metal roofs with standing seams, apply Sika® Joint Tape SA or Sika® Flexitape Heavy embedded in Sikalastic®-515 FG sealing them completely. Metal roof projects requiring a warranty should be preinspected by a Sika Representative for metal seam detailing. Make certain that all walking pads are appropriately and adequately secured. Use Sikalastic®-515 FG to caulk all edges of walking pads.
Field Application
Apply Sikalastic®-515 AC at the specified rate. Best practice is to back roll the base and intermediate coats to provide uniform coverage. Back rolling the finish or top coat is not needed unless the roof surface is unusually rough. Rough surfaces such as Mod-Bit may require additional coating to achieve the required uniform dry film thickness per warranty or project specifications. Use Sikalastic®-501 Primer at a rate of 12 -16 mils (0.75 -1.0 gal per 100 SF) depending on substrate roughness. Apply directly over mineral cap-sheets, mod-bit or other asphalt type surfaces for "bleed-blocking" capability.
The application rates mentioned are based on averaged weather conditions. Higher humidity and/or colder temperatures will slow the drying time of Sikalastic®-515 AC. In colder and/or more humid conditions, apply Sikalastic®-515 AC at thinner application rates for faster drying times (this will also increase the number of required coats).
Prior to coating any surface, be sure the coating will adhere by performing an adhesion test (ASTM D-903). Coating may be applied by brush, roller, or airless spray equipment. In areas where the roof is subject to foot traffic, it is recommended to apply walkway pads for added protection and slip resistance. Apply appropriate primer to the substrate according to the application instruction from the Primer PDS, and allow to dry.
Roof coatings should be properly maintained following industry standards of care and maintenance including annual inspections by qualified roofing contractors. All required maintenance or repairs should be undertaken immediately.
