Saint Michael's church had numerous unique stained glass windows designed with a mortar bed that the stained glass was then embedded into to form the desired artistic renderings desired to match the architectural design requirements. Over time the stained glass to mortar had begun to leak especially in driven rain events. A clear solution that would not alter the stained glass appearance or light transmission into the church was required.
PROJECT SOLUTION
The Sikalastic Clearglaze, a polycarbonate moisture triggered urethane, was chosen for its ability to provide a clear waterproof membrane that is non yellowing and can seal the mortar to stained glass transmission. The initial cleaning and mock up was conducted then water testing was conducted. Before the Sikalastic Clearglaze water ingress between the stained glass and mortar was prevalent. After the Sikalastic Clearglaze no water intrusion was observed. All stained glass windows were cleaned, wet glazed and coated with two 20 mil wet film thickness coats of Sikalastic Clearglaze.
