Albany Med is northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center and is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 734-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and which also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region’s largest physicians practice with more than 450 doctors.

The existing Heliport with the size of approx. 6000 sf located on the roof of the Hospital was in serious need of refurbishment. The unreinforced coating has become brittle over years and resulting cracks lead through water ingress. The coating started to delaminate and became a serious fall hazard to the hospital staff.

The facility management of the hospital and the Gillespie Group contacted Sika, and a reinforced liquid applied membrane (Sikalastic® RoofPro 20) with additional protection course (Sikalastic-22 Lo-Mod) and slip resistant traffic layer (Sikalastic® -735) as well custom color line stripping (Sikalastic®-735 tint base) has been choosen as best solution for this challanging project, which had to get back to service after only 8 days construction time.

PROJECT SOLUTION

The existing coating has been completely removed by mechanical grinding to create an even surface and ensure good adhesion of Sikalastic Primer EP. A fully reinforced Sikalastic RoofPro 20 system was applied to ensure long term crack bridging properties , followed by a protection course with Sikadur-22 Lo-Mod filled with quartz sand and a slip resitant traffic layer of Sikalastic®-735. For the white and red line striping Sikalastic®-735 tint base including custom color paks in signal red has been utilized.
